Tell us Master Sigmund your thoughts on bar grills on SCA helmets. Tell us of your life's quest to do away with them and the reaction you have when you see them. (Please don't confuse this reaction to the one you have with the "skull helmet". I know that is something completely different.)

Seriously share you thoughts on bar-grills and how fighters can go about getting rid of them. What are some of the things you have done and what can you suggest others do?

Give us the low down.

Battle Fortune.

Jarl Olfred up here in three mountains put it best when he said that bargrills turn good helms into mad max props. I respect the job that they have stalwartly done for the last four decades but I find it ironic that while the helmets made in the SCA have evolved considerably over the years, from the freon cans to really great well executed other wise period armour. All along helm evolution is present the 1/4" barstock grill. Keeping us safe and keeping the look and feel of our hobby a bit stunted.

Use vector art to design "grill-like" period patterns and motifs. Send them to waterjet and laser cnc cutters to be cut from sheet steel. In this method I see some small overdue progress on the bargrill front. With it we can start incorporating some period designs into our helmet most utilitarian functions and we can do it at a reasonable cost with some searching.
